There’s something about autumn in the Lake District. The bracken turns copper, the trees go gold, the air gets that crisp bite, and suddenly a good walk followed by a warm drink feels like the best thing in the world.

And when you’ve got a lakeside lodge to come back to, it really is.

Our Pemberton Park Lane at Violet Bank sits on one of the finest plots on our new development, right beside a beautifully kept lake, with water views from every room and fell views from the living room and kitchen. It’s the perfect base for exploring the fells, so here’s how we’d spend an autumn day there.

Morning: Boots On, Flask Filled

Start slow. Put the kettle on and look out over the lake while the morning mist lifts off the water. From the kitchen, you can see the fells you’ll be heading into later.

Fill the flask, dig out the walking boots and grab a proper coat. It’s autumn in Cumbria, after all.

Late Morning: Into the Fells

This is where Violet Bank really comes into its own. You’re on the quieter western side of the Lake District, so the fells are right on your doorstep without the crowds you’ll find further south.

If you fancy something gentle, Whinlatter Forest has trails for every ability, and the autumn colours through the trees are something special. For a bit more of a climb, Low Fell above Loweswater is a local favourite with big views over Crummock Water for relatively little effort. And if you want the classic postcard, the lakeside walk around Buttermere is hard to beat when the leaves are turning.

Wherever you end up, stop somewhere with a view, pour a cup from the flask and take it all in.

Afternoon: Coffee in Cockermouth

After a morning on the fells, there’s only one thing for it.

Head into Cockermouth, one of Cumbria’s loveliest market towns, where the rivers Cocker and Derwent meet. The streets are lined with independent shops and cosy coffee shops, and at this time of year that means one thing: pumpkin spice lattes.

Grab a seat by the window, wrap your hands around something warm and sweet, and watch the town go by. Add a slice of cake if you’ve earned it (and after the fells, you definitely have).

Then take a wander. Browse the shops, pop into Wordsworth House, the poet’s birthplace, or find a pub with a fire going for a quick one before heading back.

Evening: Home to the Lake

This is the moment the whole day has been building to.

Pull up at the lodge, kick off the muddy boots and put the heating on. The Park Lane is everything you’d expect from Pemberton: thoughtfully designed, generously proportioned and finished to an exceptional standard throughout. After a day outdoors, it feels like the warmest, most welcoming place in the world.

The evenings draw in earlier now, which just means more time to enjoy the view. Wrap up in a blanket, take a glass of wine outside and watch the last of the light fade across the water. When it gets too chilly, head in and carry on watching from the sofa, because every room looks out over the lake.

Tomorrow: Do It All Again

Different fell, different cafĂ©, same view to come home to. That’s the beauty of owning your own lodge: the Lakes are yours whenever you want them, in every season.
