• Relocating Owners: Do you own a holiday home at another park but feel like it’s time for a new location? We love welcoming new faces to the Hanley family and can help manage your move.

Escape to the Quiet Life: Exploring Linburn Beck and Hamsterley Forest

If your idea of a perfect getaway involves the gentle sound of a bubbling stream, miles of woodland trails, and the fresh air of the County Durham countryside, then Linburn Beck Caravan Park and the neighboring Hamsterley Forest are calling your name.

Located just on the edge of the North Pennines, this corner of the world is a hidden gem for those who want to swap the city hum for bird song and walking boots.

Your Home Base: Linburn Beck Caravan Park

Nestled in the quiet village of Hamsterley, Linburn Beck is the definition of “tranquil.” It’s a smaller, peaceful site that feels more like a private retreat than a busy holiday park.

  • Riverside Relaxation: Many of the pitches sit right along the beck, providing a soothing soundtrack to your morning coffee.

  • Peace and Quiet: With a limited number of caravans and a focus on “owners only” style tranquility, it’s the ideal spot to disconnect and recharge.

  • A Natural Playground: The park is incredibly dog-friendly, with endless countryside walks starting right from your doorstep.

Adventure Awaits: Hamsterley Forest

Just a “stone’s throw” (or a very short drive) from the park lies Hamsterley Forest, a 5,000-acre oasis that offers something for every speed of life.

Activity What to Expect
For the Families Discover the Gruffalo Sculptures, conquer the Viking Wildplay trail, or try the seasonal Stick Man trail.
For the Thrill-Seekers Home to Danny Hart’s Descend Bike Park, featuring some of the best downhill mountain biking in the North East.
For the Walkers Choose from miles of waymarked paths, from the gentle Riverside Trail to the more challenging 12km Blue Route.
For the Mindful Grab a “Wellbeing Journal” at the visitor centre and take a slow stroll along the Wellbeing Trail.

Beyond the Trees

While the forest is the main draw, you’re also perfectly positioned to explore the wider area. The medieval Raby Castlewith its 200-acre deer park is only a 15-minute drive away, and the historic market towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle offer local shops, cafes, and a dose of heritage.

Ready to plan your escape? Whether you’re looking for a permanent holiday home at Linburn Beck or just a day trip into the pines of Hamsterley, this is one of Durham’s most beautiful spots to enjoy the great outdoors.

Would you like me to help you find specific trail maps for Hamsterley Forest or check for upcoming events in the area?

The Legend of the Lammermuir Farmer: A Visit to the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum
Nestled in the quiet market town of Duns, just a short drive from Greenlaw and the Blackadder Holiday Park, lies a world-class tribute to one of the greatest racing drivers the world has ever seen. The Jim Clark Motorsport Museum isn’t just for “petrolheads”—it’s a deeply personal story about a local farmer who conquered the world, only to remain a humble Borders boy at heart.
The Man and the Legend
Jim Clark was a phenomenon. Despite his shy nature and his professional life as a farmer in the Berwickshire hills, he became a double Formula One World Champion (1963 and 1965) and the first Briton to win the Indianapolis 500. To this day, he is often cited by legends like Ayrton Senna and Jackie Stewart as the greatest driver of all time.

From a Small Room to a Grand Stage
The museum has a fascinating history of its own. It originally began in 1969 as a small “trophy room” curated by Jim’s parents. For decades, fans from across the globe would make the pilgrimage to Duns to see his incredible collection of silverware and memorabilia in a modest setting.

In 2019, following a major redevelopment project, the museum was transformed into the sleek, modern facility you see today. It now features:

Iconic Race Cars: Including Clark’s world-beating Lotus 25 and Lotus 38.

Interactive Displays: A racing simulator and film footage that brings the “Golden Age” of motor racing to life.

Personal Items: Everything from his driving gloves and helmets to his farming journals.
Planning Your Winter Visit
While many seasonal attractions in the Borders close their doors when the frost hits, the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum remains a fantastic indoor option for visitors during the quieter months. It is the perfect afternoon out if you are staying in your caravan and want to escape a chilly Scottish afternoon.

Winter Opening Hours (November – March):

Monday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Tuesday & Wednesday: Closed

Thursday, Friday & Saturday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

(Note: It is always worth checking their official website before travel, as they occasionally close for private events or during the peak Christmas/New Year week.)

Complete the Trail
If you have time after the museum, take the five-minute drive to the village of Chirnside. There, you can visit the local churchyard to see Jim Clark’s final resting place—a simple, elegant headstone that reflects the modesty of a man who was a giant of the track but a farmer at heart.
